SCCR 48 at WIPO
The 48th session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights at World Intellectual Property Organization (SCCR/48) brought together Member States, industry representatives, creators, and civil society for a week of discussions on broadcasting rights, exceptions and limitations, copyright in the digital environment, and the growing implications of artificial intelligence for the creative industries. 2026 IPA Prix Voltaire Shortlist Announced
The International Publishers Association (IPA) announced the shortlist for the 2026 Prix Voltaire, honouring exceptional courage in upholding the freedom to publish. The shortlist was announced at the World Expression Forum held in Lillehammer, Norway. This year's shortlist features six individuals and organisations who have demonstrated resilience and bravery. Read more.

IPA on the Move

The Importance of Copyright for African and Latin American Publishers
IPA organised a side event at the World Intellectual Property Organisation's 48th session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), highlighting concerns over copyright and education exceptions. Read more. 
IPA represented at Thessaloniki International Book Fair
From 7-10 May, senior representatives of the IPA participated in this year’s Thessaloniki International Book Fair. The Chair of the IPA’s Freedom to Publish Committee, Jessica Sänger, spoke about the global pressures on publishers when it comes to freedom to publish, and what the IPA is doing to highlight and combat those pressures. She spoke about IPA’s major vehicle for recognizing and celebrating the bravery of publishers: the annual IPA Prix Voltaire, which will be awarded this year at the IPA Congress in Kuala Lumpur on 5-9 July. IPA at World Expression Forum 2026
IPA attended the 5th World Expression Forum (WExFo) in Lillehammer, Norway from 1-3 June where they announced the Prix Voltaire Shortlist and hosted a workshop on the future of publishing. Read more.

Books That Couldn’t Be Silenced: The British Book Award for Freedom to Publish Goes to Virginia Giuffre and Sarah Wynn-Williams
For the first time in its history, the British Book Award for Freedom to Publish was shared among two winners: awarded jointly to Virginia Roberts Giuffre, for Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving and Fighting for Justice, and Sarah Wynn-Williams, Meta whistleblower for Careless People. Read more.
French education publishers welcome court judgement on region's digital textbooksThe Ile-de-France region had created its own digital resources for use through the Pearltrees platform and preventing teachers from using education publishers materials. The Montreuil Administrative Court ordered the Regional Council to permanently cease publishing these "open" textbooks and to remove them from the Pearltrees platform. Read more.

Delegates arrived at the World Intellectual Property Organisation building in Geneva on a cloudy Monday morning with the night's rain still wet on the ground. Building works still occupy the roads around WIPO. Read more.

IPA in the News

The 2026 IPA Prix Voltaire shortlist was reported by Publishing Perspectives, Syndicat national de l’edition, LivresHebdo and ActuaLitté. 

IPA’s side event at WIPO’s 48th SCCR was covered by the European Writers’ Council. 

As the IPA Congress in Kuala Lumpur draws nearer, TNPS reported on the Sharjah Book Authority's visit to Kuala Lumpur, and Publishing Perspectives shared the excitement building ahead of the event.
