Dear friends

It is with mixed emotions that I send this final communication as IPA President.

I left Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico feeling excited and energized after a vibrant event and, most importantly, after witnessing a resilient industry that continues to progress despite its many challenges.

The main challenge we recently faced as an industry is a global pandemic. However, COVID-19 was a much-needed wake-up call for the entire industry. We were forced to change, and many of those changes were long overdue.

One lesson we learned was the need for greater solidarity and collaboration between the entire publishing value chain. I saw an opportunity to encourage industry stakeholders to come together to overcome the challenges, so I launched the International Sustainable Publishing and Industry Resilience (Inspire) Plan. Inspire was our opportunity to reset industry relationships to collectively deal with challenges such as freedom to publish, upskilling, diversity and inclusion, and climate change.

Additionally, sourcing and scaling grassroots innovations from developing and emerging markets, which will supply the bulk of tomorrow's readers, will expand the publishing industry's horizon and likely solve developmental challenges. The African Publishing Innovation Fund, with funding from Dubai Cares, helped to do this by financing projects supporting literacy, indigenous publishing library development, and conflict resolution.

The publishing industry is at a crossroads now, and we have a real opportunity to shape our industry's future collectively. I am confident that Karine Pansa and Gvantsa Jobava will play a key role in continuing to bring everyone together.

Thank you for all your support. Together we have managed to take our industry through one of its most challenging periods. As a result, we now have a clearer path ahead with a renewed sense of energy, purpose, and a collaborative spirit.

All the best for 2023 and beyond.

Bodo
ur
IPA President

About the IPA
Established in 1896, the International Publishers Association (IPA) is the world's largest federation of publishers associations. The IPA is an industry body with a human rights mandate, whose mission is to promote and protect publishing and raise awareness of publishing as a force for economic, cultural and social development. Working in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and other supranational bodies, the IPA champions the interests of book and journal publishing at national and supranational level. Internationally, the IPA actively opposes censorship and promotes copyright, freedom to publish (including through the IPA Prix Voltaire), and literacy.
