IPA Academy goes live to help publishers around the world upskill

 The International Publishers Association Academy launches with three prestigious institutions: The Center for Publishing at The New York University School of Professional Studies (USA), Oxford International Centre for Publishing (UK) and the Publishing Training Centre (UK). These courses will roll out in March and will be complemented by a series of IPA Talks. Read more.
Charles Clark Memorial Lecture to focus on platform Regulation
Professor Mark D. Cole of the University of Luxembourg will deliver the 2022 Charles Clark Memorial Lecture under the title The answer to platform regulation is in the regulation of platforms. The lecture will be held at London Book Fair on Thursday 7 April at 3pm. Read more.
Raif Badawi Released, but Still Not Free
After 10 years of imprisonment, 2016 IPA Prix Voltaire Laureate, blogger, and free speech activist Raif Badawi has been released by the Saudi authorities. Read more.

IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi in Turkey 

International Publishers Association (IPA) President Bodour Al Qasimi returned to Istanbul earlier this month, meeting with the Turkish Publishers Association and discussing key developments at the IPA with its members – including the successful launch of the IPA Academy and the results of the InSPIRe Symposium. Read more.

Applications open for Frankfurt Fellowship and Invitation Programmes

Frankfurt Book Fair has opened applications for its two grant programmes – the Frankfurt Fellowship and the Invitation Programme. Deadline for applications is 30 April. Read more.

Applications open! UNESCO World Book Capital City 2024

The Call for Applications 2024 is open to all cities of UNESCO Member States. All applications must be submitted by email using the standard Application Form no later than 15 April 2022. Read more.

IPA Blog: University Presses Commit to Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity

On 11 January a group of University Presses in the UK and Ireland launched EvenUP. Michiel Kolman, Chair of the IPA's Inclusive Publishing and Literacy Committee spoke to a spokesperson for the group about the initiative. Read more.

IPA in the news

IPA's role in protecting copyright and representing the interests of publishers was discussed in an article on the 2022 Bologna Children's Book Fair by Publishers Weekly. The same publication's coverage of Bologna also included the announcement of the winners of the 10th annual Bologna Prize for the Best Children's Publishers of the Year, a prize co-sponsored by the fair, the Associazone Italiana Editori and the International Publishers Association. 

IPA also partnered with the fair for a Spotlight On Africa which was covered here.

Staying in Bologna, Publishing Perspectives covered the SDG Book Club discussions at the Bologna Children's Book Fair at the Authors' Café area, where it published its final reading lists, and in the form of a display thanks to the Brazilian Chapter of the SDG Book Club. Velocity of Content also covered the club in the latest edition of it's podcast.

The participation of the IPA in key discussions with publishing industry professionals representing diverse markets at the Bologna Children's Book Fair was highlighted in a piece by Gulf News. IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi was also present to celebrate the Guest of Honour title given to Sharjah during the Bologna Children's Book Fair. This was covered in an article by WAM, the Emirates News Agency. 

The launch of the IPA Academy, the program designed to assist the world's publishers in gaining commercial and technical skills needed to cope with the challenges of the pandemic, was covered by Publishing Perspectives and PublishNews.es. Bodour Al Qasimi shared a blog post on The Publishing Training Centre blog focusing on the IPA Academy, as well as its intention to support publishers through the challenges of the pandemic. You can read Bodour Al Qasimi's latest Medium posts in English and Arabic which also focus on the Academy.

The planned presence of representatives from the IPA at the upcoming Caucasus and Black Sea Basin Countries' Regional Publishing Conference (April 11-12th) was noted in an article by Publishing Perspectives.

The release of 2016 IPA Prix Voltaire Laureate Raif Badawi after 10 years in prison was covered extensively; most notably by Publishing Perspectives, Reporters Without Borders, France24, Amnesty International, and Deutsche Welle.

Publishing Perspectives published an article noting that several figures at the IPA, including IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi and the IPA's Freedom to Publish Committee Chair Kristenn Einarsson, would be participating alongside the 2021 Novel Peace Prize winners at the upcoming World Expression Forum (May 30-31, 2022), dubbed a "Davos of free speech". 

IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi's visit to Turkey was hailed as a success by Gulf Today. 

All About Book Publishing featured a special page on IPA's 125th Anniversary on page 30.
The latest edition of FrontList (India) looks ahead to World Book and Copyright Day and includes an interview with IPA's Director of Communications and Freedom to Publish, James Taylor.

IPA at 125

On 15 June 1896, the first International Publishers Congress was held in Paris. The International Publishers Congress would later become the International Publishers Association.
