| Dear IPA friends and colleagues The IPA had an extraordinary year in 2021 engaging with the key issues that concern publishers worldwide. 2021 was a second year of the COVID pandemic, of cancellations and hybrid meetings, and tentative progress towards normality. It was a year when writers, publishers and Freedom to Publish itself were under attack around the world, from Guatemala to Lebanon, from Belarus to Vietnam. It was a year in which some again attempted to undermine our industry by pretending that copyright had somehow impeded education and science, when in fact the opposite was true. I am proud to say that the IPA stood fast against these disruptions, attacks and untruths I want to thank all our members for their steadfast support throughout this difficult year and the immense amount of work undertaken this year by our new President, Bodour Al Qasimi, and Vice President, Karine Pansa, ably reinforced by our Treasurer, Thomas Heilmann. We look forward to reaching a number of milestones in 2022. Next year will see the final year of grants from the remarkably successful Africa Publishing Innovation Fund (APIF). The InSPIRe plan will take shape over 2022, and we also plan to launch the IPA Academy website. Our 126th year of existence will culminate with the 33rd IPA International Publishers Congress in Jakarta. Please save the dates for 10-12 November and join us for three days of intense discussion about publishing's place in the world and a wide-ranging exploration of new ideas. More details about the program will be revealed soon. The IPA office will close on 24 December and re-open on 4 January and I wish all our readers a happy, healthy and maybe even festive end to the year. And may 2022 be kinder to us all. Best wishes José Borghino Secretary General |
