Internet Archive draws ire of New Zealand Publishers and Authors following national library digitization deal
A joint statement issued on 16 July by the Publishers Association of New Zealand and the New Zealand Society of Authors expressed both organisations' shock at the announcement that the National Library of New Zealand would hand over hundreds of thousands of books from its collection to the notorious pirate site, the Internet Archive (IA). Hong Kong Arrests over 'Seditious' Children's Books
 
On 22 July, AFP reported that 5 members of a speech therapists union had been arrested for sedition and had their accounts frozen after publishing a series of children's books. Read more.
 
 
 
For the second year in a row, the IPA are delighted to be supporting Nielsen on an important and ambitious industry-wide survey to investigate the international landscape and perception of book prizes.

All participants of the survey will receive a summary of the findings. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and the deadline for responses has been extended to Friday 6th August.

Nigerian Copyright Reform Begins

On July 6th, the Nigerian government announced that it had presented a new bill, The Copyright (Repeal) Bill, to the country's National Assembly for approval. The proposed legislation, which represents the first significant reform of Nigeria's copyright system in decades, is intended to strenghten authorities' capacity to respond to the copyright challenges the country is facing. Read more.

IPA underlines publishers' contribution during COVID pandemic at WIPO Copyright Committee

The 41st session of the World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) took place in hybrid format from 28 June to 1 July. Member States agreed not to embark on any law-making (normative) discussions while face-to-face meetings remain impractical, but that hasn't stopped some from trying to use the pandemic as a pretext for more and broader exceptions and limitations to copyright, especially in the field of education publishing. Italian Books in translation: grants allocated by the Centre for Books and Reading


With a view to promoting the translation of Italian authors into foreign languages, the Centre for Books and Reading (Cepell), an independent institute of Italy's Ministry of Culture, has issued a call for grants allocating a total of 650,000€. The amount of each grant will vary from a min. of 500€ to a max. of 5,000€, depending on the length of the translation and other criteria laid out in the call. Read more.

IPA President, Bodour Al Qasimi was interviewed in WIPO magazine about her vision for the future of publishing.

Al Qasimi's latest Medium post on the Africa Publishing Innovations Fund was picked up in Springer's Publishing Research Quarterly.

The intervention of IPA Secretary General, José Borghino, at the WIPO SCCR meeting (see above) was picked up in Publishing Perspectives. The same publication also covered the 100 signatories of the SDG Publishers Compact.

Nasher covered the recent arrests for the publication of 'seditious' children's books in Hong Kong (see above) and included the reaction of the Chair of IPA's Freedom to Publish Committee, Kristenn Einarsson. 

Bodour Al Qasimi's participation at the Nigeria International Book Fair was picked up in the local press with the fair focusing on women in publishing. You can see her keynote here and more local coverage here.

IPA Vice President, Karine Pansa, spoke to Spanish author and publisher Jordi Nadal about his latest book "Book Therapy".

On 15 June 1896, the first International Publishers Congress was held in Paris. The International Publishers Congress would later become the International Publishers Association and this month we marked our 125th anniversary. We have opened our celebrations with a special anniversary logo, a beautiful mini-documentary talking to many IPA Past-Presidents and digitising our Centenary book for the first time.
