The Right to Reading as an Ambitious and Transformative ExperienceEvery 8 September, International Literacy Day reminds us of something that should be self-evident and yet remains far from guaranteed: learning to read and write is a right. In 2024, at least 739 million young people and adults still lacked basic literacy skills, while four in ten children failed to achieve minimum proficiency in reading. For a long time, democratising reading meant, above all, removing barriers: teaching people to read and write, expanding access to schooling, creating libraries, making books more affordable, and bringing the written word to places where it had previously been the privilege of the few.
