IPA membership to reach 107 in 85 countries
At its virtual General Assembly on 25 November 2025, the IPA confirmed the results of online elections and decisions about membership applications. New IPA Executive, Membership and Freedom to Publish Committee members were announced, along with 2 new IPA member associations. Read more.

November saw two major cases involving AI companies being resolved. The first in the UK Getty Images v. Stability AI and the second in Germany GEMA v. OpenAI. Read more.

Freedom to Publish

IPA Welcomes Release of Boualem Sansal
On 12 November 2025, Franco-Algerian author Boualem Sansal was pardoned and released from prison on humanitarian and health grounds. His release followed mediation by the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Sansal has now travelled to Germany. Read more.

IPA at Shanghai International Children's Book Fair
Representing the Association, IPA President Gvantsa Jobava delivered welcoming remarks at the International Children's Book Publisher Dialogue, where she highlighted how essential children's publishers are to the future of reading and to society as a whole. Read more. 
IPA at Future Book Forum
IPA Vice President, Giovanni Hoepli and Director of Communications and Freedom to Publish, James Taylor, attended the Canon-organised event held under the theme 'The Future of the Book'. Read more.
Educational Publishers Forum meetings
On 17 and 18 November, the IPA Educational Publishers Forum, was held in Antwerp and was kindly hosted by the IPA member, the Flemish Educational and Scientific Publishers Association (GEWU). Later in November, the African EPF held an online meeting. Read more.

IPA President, Gvantsa Jobava, participated in the Sharjah Publishers Conference, held during the Sharjah International Book Fair, as the Master of Ceremonies. Successful Promotion of International Publishers Congress 2026 at Shanghai Children's Book Fair

WIPO's Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award 2026: Call for Nominations
WIPO's Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) announced the opening of nominations for the 2026 Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing. This year's edition will take place at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. Read more.
Nominations are open for the 2026 BOP – Bologna Prize for Best Children's Publishers of the Year
In its 14th edition, the award highlights the top children's publishers of the year in each of the six geographical areas: Africa, Asia, Europe, Caribbean - Central and Latin America, North America, and Oceania. Read more.

EU: Deforestation Regulation Twists Continue
The EU Deforestation Regulation is set to come into force on 30th December 2025 having originally been set back from December 2024. However, discussions around the Regulation continue with a European Parliament vote on 26 November suggesting a possible further delay and the removal of books and other printed products. Read more. 
EDItEUR Series 10: ONIX and Indigenous publishing
In his previous article, Executive Director of EDItEUR, Graham Bell, discussed the relation between ONIX and the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). In this article, he looks at how ONIX can be a relevant resource to Indigenous publishing. Read more.

Democracy depends on reading 
Democracy depends on reading, but not in the abstract. It depends on the kind of reading that slows us down, unsettles us, and teaches us to think beyond ourselves. At a time when noise travels faster than nuance and democratic life feels increasingly fragile, the simple act of engaging deeply with a text becomes a form of resistance. Reading ambitious, critical, reflective reading remains one of the few spaces where citizens can rehearse complexity, recover attention and cultivate the inner freedoms that public freedoms require.
