IPA Secretary General delivers keynote at Southern China Book Fair
Visiting the Southern China Book Fair (15-19 August in Guangzhou) for the first time, IPA Secretary General José Borghino had two major speaking engagements. Read more.
IPA President and Secretary General participate in IFLA World Congress
From 18–22 August, IPA President Gvantsa Jobava and Secretary General José Borghino attended the World Library and Information Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan, where over 2,000 delegates from 114 countries gathered under the theme Uniting Knowledge, Building the Future. Read more.

Last Call: Nominations for Federico García Lorca for Freedom of Expression, freedom to Publish and Freedom to Read
The Group of Ibero-American Publishers Associations has issued a last call for the second edition of the Federico García Lorca Award for Freedom of Expression, Publishing, and Reading. The deadline for nominations is 15 September. Read more.
UK Banned Books Week - Get Involved!
Banned Books Week UK returns from 5–11 October 2025. It's a week to celebrate the books that have been challenged, removed or silenced, and to stand with the people who write, sell and share them. Read more.
IPA Backs "Readers March" in Utrecht Netherlands
On September 20th 2025 the International Literature Festival of Utrecht (ILFU) will be opened by a march with books to support freedom and democracy. A virtual March is also being organised online and IPA is a proud partner. Read more.

Karl Schlögel to receive the 2025 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade
The Board of Trustees of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association) has chosen the German historian and essayist Karl Schlögel to be the recipient of this year's Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. The ceremony will take place on 19 October. Read more.

French Book Sector Urges Action on Second Hand Books
Permanent Council of Writers and the French publishers association (SNE) reaction to the opinion of the Council of State on the second-hand book sector calls for 'legislative or regulatory intervention' over remuneration. Read more. 
UNESCO Opens Call for World Book Capital City 2027
On 8 August 2025, UNESCO opened it call for applications for the 2027 edition of the World Book Capital to succeed Rabat which will be the 2026 Capital. Applications are welcome until 15 September 2025. Read more.
Accessibility: Winners of the 2025 ABC International Excellence Awards announced: DADO Editorial Sensorial (Colombia) and the APACE Project (E.U.)
WIPO's Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) announced the winners of the 2025 International Excellence Awards for Accessible Publishing at the World Blindness Summit in São Paulo, Brazil. DADO Editorial Sensorial of Colombia received the publisher award, while the APACE Project, co-funded by the European Union, was recognized in the initiative category. Read more.
VAT: Denmark Drops VAT on Books
On August 20, the Danish government, led by Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt, announced that books will be taxed at zero VAT from 2026. Read more.
IPA Member webinars: AIE Italy offers webinars on accessibility metadata and artificial intelligences
IPA's Italian member, the Associazione Italiana Editori is offering two webinars in September on accessibility and artificial intelligence. IPA members, and their members, benefit from discounts. Read more.

Michiel Kolman: This year DEI, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, has been in the news a lot. Of course, at the IPA, with our Inclusive Publishing (and Literacy) Committee we are supportive of an inclusive publishing industry, where everyone can be themselves and contribute to their fullest potential. Read more.

IPA in the News

IPA's participation in different events has been picked up with Secretary General Borghino's participation at the South China Book Fair including an interview with CGTN and GoGuangdong. IPA President, Gvantsa Jobava's participation a t Book 2.0 (report to come) being covered by Publishing Perspectives. 
 
The same publication covered IPA's Frankfurt schedule, as well as referencing IPA's work on the Sustainable Development Goals in piece by contributor Arpita Das.
 
Finally, IPA's Freedom to Publish work was mentioned in two publications with Publishing Perspectives interviewing Dar El Shorouk's Ahmed Bedeir on their decision to sponsor the Prix Voltaire and the Bookseller looking ahead to Banned Books Week in the UK.
