Jakarta: IPA Site Visit Prepares International Publishers Congress

2022 IPA Prix Voltaire shortlist announced
On the occasion of the first World Expression Forum, WEXFO, being held in Lillehammer, the International Publishers Association has announced the shortlist for the 2022 IPA Prix Voltaire, celebrating publishers from Afghanistan/Canada, Guatemala, India, Thailand, and Ukraine. The award ceremony will be held at the 33rd International Publishers Congress in Jakarta on 12 November. Read more.
SCCR42
In May, delegates attended the first face-to-face WIPO SSCR to take place since 2019. Over the course of 5 days, Geneva became the hub for a series of thoughtful discussions and analyses on the copyright ecosystem, a broadcasting treaty, and exceptions and limitations of the same. The IPA was enthusiastically engaged at this SCCR, covering the daily conference proceedings. Read more.

Previous IPA President speaks at Canadian Copyright Conference
On 31 May, IPA past President, Hugo Setzer, spoke at a hybrid conference organized by the Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. 'The Future of Copyright in Canada' focused on the ongoing fall out from the 2012 amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act. Read more.

Belarus - Reports of Detention of Publisher and Bookseller Raise Concerns 

The International Publishers Association, the Federation of European Publishers and the European and International Booksellers Federation are extremely concerned by new reports from RadioFreeEurope regarding the detentions on 16 May of Andrey Yanushkevich, and his associate, Nasta Karnatskaya. Read more.

Myanmar's closing of third publishing house appears to represent a new onslaught against literary and creative content 

In response to reports that a Yangon-based publishing house has become the third to be shuttered in recent weeks, PEN America and IPA condemned the closure and expressed concern that the Myanmar military junta is ramping up censorship of literary and creative content, in blatant disregard for free expression and the freedoms to publish and access information. Read more.

IPA Academy now fully live

Following the initial launch in March, the IPA Academy is now hosting the full range of courses from our content developers - The Center for Publishing at The New York University School of Professional Studies (USA), Oxford International Centre for Publishing (UK) and the Publishing Training Centre (UK). Publisher members of IPA members can access the Academy for free. The 42nd session of the World Intellectual Property Organisation's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SSCR), recently held in Geneva and with the IPA in attendance, was covered in a piece by Creative Industries News.

IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi's intervention at the 42nd SSCR, where she spoke on the vital importance of global copyright frameworks in boosting the role of the publishing industry in cultivating literacy, transmitting cultural heritage, fostering cross-cultural understanding, supporting diversity, advancing education, and protecting local and minority languages, was reported on by ZAWYA and WAM, the Emirates News Agency. Bodour also shared her own reflections on the 42nd SCCR in her latest Medium post.

PEN America and IPA's joint statement in response to concerning reports about censorship of literary and creative content and the state of the freedom of expresssion and the freedoms to publish and access information in Myanmar was picked up in Publishing Perspectives. 

The inaugural session of the World Expression Forum (WEXFO) in Lillehammer, Norway, counted with the participation of IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi and IPA  Freedom to Publish Committee Chair, Kristenn Einarsson. It was also a significant event for the IPA, as the 2022 IPA Prix Voltaire shortlist was announced at the opening night dinner. The Prix Voltaire shortlist was picked up in Livres Hebdo and Actualitté (both French), PublishNews.es, Chytomo (Ukraine) and FrontList (India).

The reaction of the IPA, the FEP, and EIBF to the worrying news of the detention of two Belarusian publishing professionals - the director of a publishing house, Andrey Yanushkevich, and his associate, Nasta Karnatskaya - was discussed by Publishing Perspectives.

During a recent trip to Colombia and Argentina, IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi illustrated the need to develop women's roles in world publishing and the potential for women's empowerment in the publishing industry. This discussion was reported on by Publishing Perspectives. 

A spotlight was placed on the willingness of publishers around the world to support booksellers in their mission to promote the culture of reading in their communities and reinforce general awareness about the importance of books at the inaugural International Booksellers Conference in Sharjah, UAE. The intervention at the conference by IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi was highlighted in coverage from Gulf Today and Gulf News.
