Prix Voltaire ceremony at Guadalajara International Book Fair honours Dar Al Jadeed publishing house from Lebanon. Journalist Jorge Ramos pays tribute to co-founders Rasha Al Ameer and Lokman Slim: 'Thanks to you, people like me can speak freely today. I do not exaggerate by saying that we are here because of your courage and that of your brother Lokman. You have all my admiration and respect.' Read more.

Inclusive Publishing

Taylor & Francis and NNELS were awarded the 2021 WIPO International Excellence Awards for Accessible Publishing. We are delighted to bring you two interviews with the winners. Michiel Kolman, Chair of IPA's Inclusive Publishing and Literacy Committee has two blog posts looking at how publishing can be more inclusive.

Daniela Levy-Pinto, Manager of the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS) received WIPO's Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. She talks to IPA about receiving the award and the work NNELS does on accessibility. Read more.

Industry Statistics

Two new reports, one from WIPO, one from IPA and IFRRO, provide insight into the publishing industry.

State of Global Publishing in 2020 

In a newly published report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), data gathered from a worldwide publishing industry survey done in 2020 suggests that countries had very mixed experiences in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is important to note that available data indicators vary from country to country. Read more.
The prelimary findings of the WIPI figures were presented at Frankfurt Book Fair.

Identifier and Metadata Standards in the Publishing Industry

In late October, IPA and IFRRO published this report to provide a high-level overview of the deployment of technical standards in the global publishing value and supply chains. Read more.

Talking Copyright from Manila to Melbourne

IPA's Secretary General travelled virtually to Manila and Melbourne at the end of November to promote copyright at the Philippines International Copyright Summit and prompt conversations about Copyright, the Freedom to Publish and Sustainability at the Independent Publishing Conference. Read more.

The 2021 edition of Jakarta Content Week, or JakTent, saw IPA partner to organize discussion on Copyright and Freedom to Publish. Read more.

Events

The month of November started with a very busy Sharjah International Book Fair where IPA partnered with the 3-day publishers conference with sessions on sustainability and education, and also held meetings for the Africa Publishing Innovation Fund and World Book Capital Cities.

IPA President Visits Publishers in Spain, UAE and Greece

IPA President, Bodour Al Qasimi has continued her tour of publishers associations around the world to learn more about the situation of different IPA members. Read more.

IPA and Sharjah International Book Fair partner for 3 day conference

The IPA and the Sharjah Book Authority co-hosted a three-day publishers' conference (31 October – 2 November) as an overture to this year's Sharjah International Book Fair. Read more.

Guadalajara Round-Up

Freedom to Publish was at the centre of IPA's presence in Guadalajara with the Prix Voltaire ceremony, a freedom to publish seminar and the creation of a freedom to publish committee by the Grupo Ibero-americano de Editores. Guadalajara also saw the appointment of a new chair for the Latin American Educational Publishers Forum.

Mexican publishers and Guadalajara Fair commit to Sustainable Development Goals

On the occasion of the 35th Guadalajara International Book Fair, the Mexican publishers' association, CANIEM, and the book fair itself both signed the SDG Publishers Compact. Read more.

New Chair of the Latin American Educational Publishers Forum

Eduardo Kruel Rodrigues, takes over from, Jorge Muñoz Rau, the inaugural Chair of the Latin American EPF at a meeting during the Guadalajara Book Fair. Read more.

Grupo Ibero-americano de Editores creates Freedom to Publish Committee

During Guadalajara International Book Fair the Grupo Ibero-americano de Editores held a hybrid meeting where it formally adopted a proposal to create a freedom to publish committee. Read more.

On 15 June 1896, the first International Publishers Congress was held in Paris. The International Publishers Congress would later become the International Publishers Association and in June 2021 we marked our 125th anniversary. IPA in the news

The announcement of Dar Al Jadeed publishing house as the 2021 IPA Prix Voltaire laureate as well as the ceremony have been covered widely by Publishing Perspectives (ceremony, opinion), The Bookseller, Publishers Weekly, Book Brunch, Ahram Online and ArabLit in English as well as ActuaLitté, Livres Hebdo, Börsenblatt, and Giornale della Libreria.

Reports covering the announcement of the 2021 IPA Prix Voltaire and Prix Voltaire Special Award laureates in a variety of different languages include Almodon and Nabd (Arabic), Suspilne Media (Ukranian), and the Noticiero Científico y Cultural Iberoamericano – Noticias NCC, Informador, Artistegui Noticias, Ray Zubiri, la Universidad de Guadalajara, and Diario de Mexico (Spanish).

The participation of the IPA at the Guadalajara International Book Fair was also covered by El País which followed up with detailed article covering IPA's different Freedom to Publish events at the fair.

The participation of the IPA and the hosting of this year's Prix Voltaire Award Ceremony by the Guadalajara International Book Fair was highlighted in an article by Publishers Weekly.

The National and L'Orient du Jour also highlighted 2021 IPA Prix Voltaire winner Dar Al Jadeed publishing house and its co-founders, the late Lokman Slim and his sister Rasha Al Ameer.

The Turkish Publishers Association and the Syndicat national de l'édition also highlighted the news on their websites.

The hybrid approach and return to semi-normality at the Frankfurt Book Fair, as well as a discussion on the future of the publishing industry by Dr. Michiel Kolman, former President of the IPA and now Chair of its Inclusive Publishing & Literacy Committee, were highlighted in an article by Stora Enso.

Exact Editions' COP26 Virtual Book Showcase, an initiative supported by the IPA and Save the Children, was discussed in an interview with Rachel Martin, Global Director of Sustainability at Elsevier.

This year's IPA general assembly and the welcoming of new members into the International Publishers Association was covered by ActuaLitté.
