South Africa – Defective Copyright and Performers Protection Act Amendment Bills still hang in the balance
On 11 and 12 August extensive hearings were held in the Portfolio Committee of Trade and Industry in the South African Parliament, after a call for submissions. Read more.
Canada Supreme Court judgement sees authors and publishers urge copyright reform
On Friday 30 July the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) issued its judgement in the York v Access Copyright case, deciding that certified tariffs are not mandatory in a blow to the collective administration of copyright in Canada. The judgement drew disappointed and critical reactions from authors and publishers, and mounting calls for urgent legislative reform to fix a broken system. Read more.

Creative Industry Statistics for Africa in the spotlight at WIPO-ARIPO workshop

IPA Secretary General, José Borghino, joined representatves from the music and film sectors, in presenting the importance of gathering data on the creative industries to an audience of Member States of the African Regional Intellectual Property Office (ARIPO) at the WIPO-convened workshop, On Building National Capacity for Analysis of Creative Industries. Read more.

Charles Clark Memorial Lecture returns with double-header and AI focus

Judge Kathleen O'Malley of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and British author Tom Chatfield, will deliver the 2021 Charles Clark Memorial Lecture at 3pm CEST on Wednesday 29 September. Read more.

IPA to celebrate International Translation Day with special webinar

30 September is International Translation Day and IPA has brought together an exciting group of speakers to look at the global landscape for translation rights through the perspectives of authors, publishers and translation funds from Italy, Brazil, Georgia and the UAE. Read more.

Finalists Announced for the 2021 Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award


The shortlist for the 2021 ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing has been posted. The WIPO led Accessible Books Consortium will unveil the names of the winners at the awards ceremony to be held at the Frankfurter Buchmesse on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. Read more.

Life Below Water: Sustainable Development Goal 14 Reading List

On August 31st, 2021, the newest reading list for the UN Sustainable Development Goals Book Club was announced. The books, which are in all six official UN languages, cover SDG 14 – life below water. Read more.

In previewing plans for the second edition of Jakarta Content Week "JakTent", Publishing Perspectives notes that the 33rd edition of the International Publishers Congress will take place during 2022 edition. Look out for more news on our Jakarta Congress and the 2021 JakTent programme soon.

IPA President, Bodour Al Qasimi delivered a keynote at the Publishers Association of New Zealand international conference which was unfortunately impacted by lockdown.

Watch IPA's mini-documentary to celebrate our 125th anniversary.
On 15 June 1896, the first International Publishers Congress was held in Paris. The International Publishers Congress would later become the International Publishers Association and this month we marked our 125th anniversary. We have opened our celebrations with a special anniversary logo, a beautiful mini-documentary talking to many IPA Past-Presidents and digitising our Centenary book for the first time.
