Welcome to the January 2020 IPA newsletter
The Christmas period brought sad news for IPA's 2019 Prix Voltaire recipient, imprisoned Egyptian publisher Khaled Lotfy, who found out that his publishing house would be excluded from the Cairo International Book Fair and then, on 24 December, that his final appeal against his prison sentence had been rejected. You can read IPA's reactions below.

We have announced the first set of speakers of the 33rd International Publishers Congress with more names to be announced soon. We are delighted to have celebrated Norwegian author Maja Lunde, and South Afican Political Cartoonist, Zapiro, among many others. If you missed the early bird deadline, don't despair. We're also pleased to confirm an extended reduced rate on Congress tickets until the end of February.

We have lots of other news for you on Copyright (including the Audible Captions case, Tom Kabinet and lots of consultations), WIPO's hunt for its next Director General to replace Francis Gurry, as well as the SDG Book Club and the UK Publishers Association report on diversity.

We're also saying a big thank you and farewell to our treasurer, Werner Stocker, who after 11 years stood down at the end of 2019. We are also very pleased to welcome Thomas Heilmann as our new treasurer.
