Greetings readers,
Frankfurt Book Fair dominated
October for IPA where we launched the Sustainable Development Goals Publishers Compact (alongside the UN, Frankfurt Book Fair and the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels) and our brand new State of Publishing Reports - 7 reports on a range of aspects to international publishing.

Our session with Frankfurt Book Fair on the Freedom to Publish situation in Vietnam took on an extra level of importance following the arrest of Pham Doan Trang, co-founder of IPA 2020 Prix Voltaire laureate Liberal Publishing House. Accessibility, diversity and the destination of our next Congress were all other events in the spotlight which you can watch below.

If you think we have missed anything, let the editor know at taylor@internationalpublishers.org.

IPA in the news

IPA's appeal to free Pham Doan Trang, publisher and co-founder of Liberal Publishing House which received the 2020 IPA Prix Voltaire and was arrested in the beginning of the month in Viet Nam, was taken up by various outlets, such as The Bookseller, Publishing Perspectives, Publishers Weekly, All About Book Publishing, Nasher, Actualitté, Livres Hebdo and la Croix.

Her arrest was also discussed by local news such as BBC Viet Nam and VoA as well as in blog posts by the Global Voices advox (also here) and the Passive Voice. Defend the Defenders and the 88 Project also picked up the attempt to silence Trang's voice as a human rights defender, while Thoibao specifically highlighted IPA president Hugo Setzer's statement on her courage.

The launch of IPA's new State of Publishing Reports was featured in the Publishing Perspectives Frankfurt Magazine and noted here and here. The report "Freedom to Publish: Challenges, Violations and Countries of Concern" and its finding of the growing threat of self-censorship was stressed by the Bookseller, Giornale della Libreria, and Actualitté. Livres Hebdo and Actualitté dedicated articles to a number of the individual reports.

IPA's hosting of various events on the current issues and trends in publishing at the Frankfurt Book Fair was covered here.

The panel discussion during the Frankfurter Buchmesse on the topic "Improving diversity in Publishing: Who Can Lead the Change Process?", featuring former IPA president Michiel Kolman, was taken up by the Literary Field and the Bookseller.
