World Book Day: Authors, Publishers and Booksellers Call for International Support

We, the undersigned representatives of the global book industry urge governments all over the world to recognize, support and celebrate the importance of books, learning solutions, and professional and scholarly content by adopting economic stimulus packages to sustain their respective publishing sectors and the value chains that surround them. Copyright: key to empowerment 

Publishers continue to curate, educate and entertain during COVID-19 pandemic. On the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, 26 April, which this year falls in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Publishers Association is proud to highlight the time-tested importance of the global copyright framework. International Publishers Appeal for Pardon for Lotfy

On the occasion of Sinai Liberation Day on April 25, with Ramadan, the month of forgiveness, approaching, and as Khaled Lotfy has already served more than one-third of his liberty-depriving sentence in prison, IPA reiterates its appeal to Egyptian president Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to release Egyptian publisher Khaled Lotfy. Thai Publishers association one of first to hold 2020 online book fair in light of coronavirus outbreak

PUBAT, the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand, hosted its first online book fair from March 25 to April 5, supported by the provider LNWshop, after the coronavirus outbreak led to the cancellation of the 48th National Book Week. Read more. 

IPA, WHO and UNICEF launch Read the World on International Children's Book Day to support children and young people in isolation

Much-loved children's authors are joining an initiative to read extracts of their books to millions of children and young people currently living in isolation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the World is a collaboration between the International Publishers Association (IPA), the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. Bologna Prize (BOP 2020) to be announced online 

Although the Bologna Children's Book Fair has been cancelled, BCBF is launching a new online project to support the children's book community including the award ceremony for the 2020 BOP (Bologna Prize for Best Children's Publishers of the Year). Read more. 

IPA invites African innovators to solve remote learning challenges amid COVID-19 pandemic outbreak 
 

The International Publishers Association (IPA) is offering financial support for African publishing entrepreneurs to overcome the staggering impact of COVID-19 pandemic on education in 2020 and beyond. Read more. 

IPA joins UNESCO's #LearningNeverStops Coalition

On 22 February 2020, the eighth list of books for the UN SDG Book Club was announced. The list of titles in all six official UN languages, aimed at children aged 6-12, focuses on the eighth sustainable development goal – decent work and economic growth. Read more. 

 

Kuala Lumpur succeeds Sharjah as 2020 World Book Capital City

Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur assumed its role as UNESCO World Book Capital on 23 April, succeeding UAE's Sharjah. Both cities were unable to hold the planned physical ceremonies due to the coronavirus pandemic but took their shows online.

IPA in the news


The joint launch of the "Read the World" initiative by IPA, WHO and UNICEF to support children and young people in isolation on April 2, 2020 – International Children's Book Day – received attention by various outlets. Read more here, here or on Publishers Weekly. The website of the World Economic Forum also featured the campaign, as did Publishing Perspectives.
 
The first live-streamed reading session featuring the Italian author Elisabetta Dami was commented on here and here. The book "My Hero is You, How kids can fight COVID-19!" and the animated video "Tralala the Tiger" (English and Tagalog), created to support this campaign and explain the disease to children, were mentioned in GMA News Online.
 
IPA's call for industry solidarity to weather the coronavirus crisis was picked up by the The Bookseller. The newly created Facebook group "Publishers Without Borders" hosted a live online chat which included a conversation with IPA president Hugo Setzer, which was mentioned by Publishers Weekly. Hugo Setzer's video message on COVID-19 directed at publishers across the globe was reproduced here. 

The Bookseller picked up IPA's statement on World Intellectual Property Day 2020 on the importance of copyright during the pandemic. The statement was also featured on Börsenblatt and Publishing Perspectives. It was also mentioned here.  
 
The joint statement by IPA and other global publishing bodies, released on World Book Day 2020, was reported on by Publishing Perspectives, ActuaLitté, PublishNews and Livres Hebdo. This call for more support of the book industry during the coronavirus pandemic was taken up here, here and here. The Bookseller also wrote a piece on this.
