Freedom to Publish

Book Censorship in Canada
On 6 February 2026, IPA members, the Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP) and the Canadian Publishers' Council (CPC), alongside the Literary Press Group of Canada (LPG), condemned the Government of Alberta's decision to proceed with its discriminatory book ban, now formally in effect in schools across the province. Lord Justice Arnold Confirmed for Charles Clark Memorial Lecture at London Book Fair
The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Arnold, an eminent judge on matters pertaining to IP law will deliver a lecture titled, "The Territoriality of Copyright under Strain: Implications for the Publishing Industry". Registrations are now open. Read more. 
Report Indicates that Piracy Accounts for Nearly a Third of the Italian Book Market
In a new report, the Association of Italian Publishers (Associazione Italiana Editori, AIE) and the Federation of Italian Newspaper Publishers (Federazione Italiana Editori Giornali, FIEG) presented research suggesting that piracy is costing the Italian publishing industry approximately €722 million in lost sales and approximately 4,500 jobs, rising to 11,500 when related industries are also included. In February 2026, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) announced that publishers have responded in court to Google's January 29th opposition to their motion to intervene in the Google Generative AI Copyright Litigation. Read more. 
WIPO to Launch Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII)
IPA Executive Committee member, Dante Cid (Brazil) speaks in final webinar ahead of the launch of the AIII which is designed to facilitate global dialogue on the technical and operational aspects of the intellectual property system in the context of artificial intelligence. Read more.

Christoph Pienkoss confirmed as new Chair of IPA Educational Publishers Forum
Christoph Pienkoss (Verband Bildungsmedien, Germany) to succeed Brian Gilsenan (C.J. Fallon, Ireland) as the Chair of the IPA Educational Publishers Forum which brings together K-12 educational publishers. José Manuel Anta (Spanish Publishers Federation, Spain) to become Vice Chair. Read more.
IPA supports Slovenian Educational Publishers
IPA President, Gvantsa Jobava, and IPA member, the European Educational Publishers Group, are supporting educational publishers in Slovenia following the revision of the curriculum and the approval framework for learning materials. Read more.
UK: High Court Judgement on Judicial Review on Oak National Academy
On 24 February, the UK's Department for Education suffered a defeat in the High Court on the Judicial Review on the Oak National Academy. The High Court granted an application brought by The British Educational Suppliers Association, IPA member the Publishers Association, and the Society of Authors to expand the scope of the judicial review challenge brought against the Secretary of State for Education in relation the arm's length body, Oak National Academy.
