2023 Prix Voltaire

Prix Voltaire ceremony confers prize on Mazin Lateef and Special Award for Volodymyr Vakulenko
Iraqi publisher Mazin Lateef Ali, abducted in January 2020, awarded the 2023 International Publishers Association's Prix Voltaire laureate at the award ceremony at the World Expression Forum in Lillehammer, Norway. The IPA also announced a Prix Voltaire Special Award for murdered Ukrainian children's book author and poet, Volodymyr Vakulenko. Read more.
EU busy with AI, assessing copyright in third countries and proposals for the book sector
A year ahead of European Parliament elections and another 6 months before the appointment of the new College of Commissioners, the EU institutions are wrapping up different pieces of legislation, starting with Artificial Intelligence. Read more.
WEXFO 2023 – Inspiring and troubling in equal measure
 
The second edition of WEXFO opened under a warm, blue Lillehammer sky on 22 May. Its ambitious programme was spread across 4 days and made up of 4 different events with the addition of a parallel WEXFO Youth programme. Read more.

IPA Releases New Book on last 25 years of the association's history
Authored by IPA Past President, Hugo Setzer, the new book The Fifth Quarter Century: IPA 1996-2021 details the evolutions of the book sector in general and the association in particular over the past 25 years. Read more.
Educational Publishers Forum meets in Madrid
The 53rd Educational Publishers Forum took place in Madrid on 2nd June with a wide-reaching programme covering national and international policy making, artificial intelligence in education and an initiative to facilitate the availability of digital resources in Spanish schools. Read more.
Publishers File Amicus Brief Supporting Patrons of the Llano County Library System in Little v. Llano County
On 2 June, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and 7 publishers filed an amicus brief in support of patrons of the Llano County Library System in the case of  Little v. Llano County, a suit that challenges the removal of 17 books from the shelves of public libraries. Read more.
Collective, intersectional, intergenerational: the battle for environmental sustainability
Can we save the planet before dinner? This question guided the meeting on environmental sustainability organised by the Salone Internazionale del Libro di Torino in collaboration with the Italian Publishers' Association (AIE) was held reflecting on the themes and practices of environmental sustainability. Read more.
WIPO Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award 2023: Call for Nominations
Nominations are now open for the ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing, which recognizes a publisher and a project initiative that each demonstrate outstanding leadership and achievements in advancing the accessibility of commercial e-books or other digital publications for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print-disabled. IPA in the news

IPA's 2023 Prix Voltaire received broad coverage from around the world. Publishing Perspectives and Velocity of Content ran interviews with Victoria Amelina who received the Special Award on behalf of Volodymyr Vakulenko. Other coverage included The Bookseller, Publishers Weekly, LivresHebdo, Actualitté (France), Börsenblatt (Germany), Giornale della libreria (Italy), Publish News (Spain and Brazil), Bok 365 (Norway). Shortlisted nominee Mahr Husain (Zuka Books, Pakistan) was also interviewed about the Award by Aurora. Arabic language coverage included Sky News Arabia, There was coverage in Ukraine for the Special Award from Chytomo and Espreso among others.
 
The publication of Hugo Setzer's book on the last 25 years of IPA's history, was picked up in Publishing Perspectives, PublishNews.es and All About Book Publishing. Hugo Setzer is not the only past IPA President to have a book out – Richard Charkin's book has also been attracting coverage including in the Sydney Morning Herald.
 
Finally, IPA Secretary General, José Borghino was quoted in a Globe and Mail (Canada) article entitled Copyright loophole should be plugged.
