Read more. | | | | | | Canadian Publishers Associations welcome potential Copyright reform implied by 2022 Budget announcement On April 8 the Canadian government tabled it's Budget 2022 report, which confirmed the Government of Canada's commitment to ensuring that the Copyright Act protects all creators and copyright holders, acknowledges the importance of creating the conditions to ensure a sustainable educational publishing industry, including fair remuneration for rightsholders. IPA President, Hugo Setzer attended the ceremony on IPA's behalf. Read more. | | | IPA in the news The announcement celebrating the establishment of the 'Stand with Ukrainian Writers Fund' by the Sharjah World Book Capital Office and the Wroclaw Literature House (organizing entity of UNESCO's Wroclaw City of Literature project) was welcomed by Bodour Al Qasimi, President of the International Publishers Association (IPA). This was covered in an article by Gulf Today and ZAWYA. IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi was interviewed by W Radio regarding her participation in the Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogotá (FILBO), as well as questions of freedom to publish and the importance of children's literature around the world. The role of publishers in promoting principles of dialogue and understanding that contribute to consolidating peace during conflicts was highlighted by IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi at the Caucasus and Black Sea Basin Countries' Regional Publishing Conference in Tbilisi, Georgia. Notably, Al Qasimi's visit took place as Tbilisi culminated its time as UNESCO's 2021 World Book Capital. The conference, organized by the Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association, was covered by Publishing Perspectives, Publishers Weekly, WAM, the Emirates News Agency and Gulf Today. The IPA's focus on sustainability at the 2022 London Book Fair was discussed by Publishing Perspectives. The participation of the IPA – and of IPA President Bodour Al Qasimi and the naming of Sharjah as Market Focus nation – at the London Book Fair was further covered by WAM, the Emirates News Agency, Publishing Perspectives, and Gulf Today. A special session on the importance of publishing, culture, and literature in situations of conflict was held at the London Book Fair. The event was covered by The National News. It included the participation of Al Qasimi and Cortina Butler, deputy director of arts at the British Council, and Jane Mann from Cambridge University Press. The session closed with a video message from Oleksandr Afonin, the Chairman of IPA member, the Ukrainian Publishers and Booksellers Association. His message was picked up in The Guardian. A spotlight was placed on the 33rd International Publishers Congress – to be held in November 2021 – by the participation of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency at the 2022 London Book Fair. Hugo Setzer, past President of the IPA and head of the IPA's Accessibility Working Group, was mentioned in an article by Publishers Weekly discussing the return of the Buenos Aires Book Fair and the Madrid Book Fair. The release of PEN America's Freedom to Write Index on April 13th, 2022 highlighted the alarming state of the freedom of expression and freedom to publish around the world. Among this year's notable cases mentioned in a Publishing Perspectives article were IPA Prix Voltaire Laureates Raif Badawi and IPA Prix Voltaire Laureate Pham Doan Trang.
